The success of the Daf trucks provided a financial foundation for the development of a small "luxury" car. Development started in 1955 and in March 1956 the first full size model was made, followed by a pre-production car by the 9th of September of that year. On that day, the car was presented alongside some of itīs future competitors, a VW Beetle, a Fiat 600 and a Loyd. The purpose of this presentation was to get some reactions of a select group of people to the newly developed car.
In 1957 a small batch of pre-production cars was made mainly for publicity reasons.
The car was introduced on the Auto RAI in Amsterdam on the 7th of February 1958. 4.000 cars were ordered at the exhibition, which surely exceeded expectation.
In the beginning the cars were available in two versions, the "Standaard" (standard) and the "Luxe" (luxury).
The Standard was very basic, only available in grey-green colour with grey interior, without wheelcovers and with ivory coloured bumpers.
Most buyers however opted for the "Luxe" which was available in six colours. The combination of a white roof and white walled tires was optional. The interior was darkgrey with grey or black and white. The wheelcovers and bumpers were chrome.
In 1960 some slight changes were made. The headlights were bigger, the direction indicators were placed below the headlights.
A year later, alongside the introduction of the 750 and the Daffodil, the 600 was modified again. The bodywork was changed in detail and matched that of the 750, including the chrome rim around the grille. The engine was also modified, now stemming from the 750 but with the same specifications as the previous 600.
